This popular program is back! Earn 10 hours of community service credit by knitting a winter scarf which will be donated to a local charity. The scarves will be created by knitting rectangles in assorted colors and then stitching them together to make one-of-a-kind creations.

We have a fun and exciting way to earn community service credit. We are celebrating the 1950s by holding a Sock Hop at the Bates House and are looking for several volunteers to help us set up, decorate, serve light refreshments, as well as clean up after the event. Volunteers must be able to commit to the entire 5 hour event and are encouraged (but not required) to dress in 1950s style. Registration required.

Remember the good old days of Rock & Roll? Poodle skirts and ducktails? Enjoy dancing, light refreshments and trivia questions. Learn one of the popular dances of the times with our professional dance instructor, Norma Granofsky. Singles and couples are welcome, 18 years and older. Come and enjoy the atmosphere and the music of the 1950s provided by a D.J. from Sensational Sounds. Library cardholders may each register one guest. Space is limited. Come to the Adult Reference Desk, beginning November 1, to register and pick up your ticket. No online registration for this event.

The History of the Circus

Last May, the final curtain fell on the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, ending an American tradition. Join Marilyn Carminio as she traces circus history—from ancient times to the present. Not only will we meet the myriad of performers that creates the show, but also two of the greatest showmen on earth—P.T. Barnum and John Ringling. Animals played a key role, and ethical issues surrounding their role in the modern circus will be discussed.

During World War II, women secret agents of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) infiltrated Nazi-occupied France and worked with the French Resistance in disrupting and destroying vital enemy operations. Patricia DelGiorno will explore the highly-gendered cultural and military borders the women crossed in order to carry out their exceedingly dangerous missions. She will also reveal the heavy prices they paid for their patriotism (capture, torture and, for some, execution).
