Brown Bag Lunch: The Rebirth of Caffe Lena – Legendary Folk Music Coffee House

Event Type: Adult Programs
Date: 9/14/2017
Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Time: 1:00 PM
Caffè Lena opened in 1960 in quiet Saratoga Springs, far from the folk music hubs of Greenwich Village and Boston. After nearly six decades of continuous operation, the venue has outlasted all the other folk music clubs of its era and achieved international renown for preserving and redefining America's homegrown musical traditions. But in 2012, Caffè Lena's historic Phila Street home faced demolition unless a $2 million restoration was undertaken. With photos and stories, Caffè Lena Executive Director Sarah Craig will tell the story of a tiny folk music club the Library of Congress has called "A National Treasure," and how a community responded when the venue's future was in peril.
