The bane chronicles is a very interesting book made up of many short stories about Magnus Banes immortal life. Knowing that he cannot die, Magnus takes many exciting adventures that leave me laughing out loud. I recommend that you read the mortal instruments and the infernal devices series before this book (both by Cassandra Clare) because there are times in this book that will reference the characters in these series.  Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

Creepy with black ink, this manga includes magic, pain and symbolism. The many intricate mysteries and biblical references tell about the wanderings of Earl Cain Hargreaves around 19th century London with his manservant Riff and half-sister Mary Weather. As a warning, it can get dark and commonly deals with death, but is worth the melancholy.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

With the makings of an average retelling of a 'fairy tale' type book - girl has an oppressive guardian then magical intervention promises to make life better- the first half of the book stands out little among other medieval fantasy books. It's only apparent unique qualities are magically transparent walls and the lack of a direct and immediate introduction of the love interest. The style of writing suggests the author studied heavily for the verbal/reading part of the SAT or has a well worn dictionary/thesaurus. The words flow fine, but may cause the reader to wear out their own dictionary. For casual reading.  Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

Leapfrogging off of the previous volumes which explained the origins of our hero, Link, Majora's Mask sends Link to a strange and difficult, but unfailingly fixable, world. Link's perseverance, courteousness and justice are inspiring. The blatant morality is not stiff but easily moderated with fun, especially because the main character appears about 10. The short story at the end is of a different feel and features an adult Link, yet still conveys Link's heroism and justice, now with strong maturity. The novel and short story are perfect foils of the range of Link's characteristics.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

The Ocarina of Time Part 2 concludes the story of the origin of Link, the Hero of Time, his allegiance to Zelda and his commitment to save worlds throughout time. There are also some amusing short stories at the end of this volume. The story is well arranged into panels.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

A concise and swiftly moving action adventure manga, Ocarina of Time Part 1 provides explanation of the concept behind The Legend of Zelda and why it is called that when Link, and not Zelda, is whose exploits the series follows. It excellently characterizes Link and his development as a hero. The art is great and the settings wonderfully detailed.  Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

Stiefvater develops Kate 'Puck' quickly, yet effectively through her interactions with her horse and brothers and also through her reaction to threat of debtors taking her family house. Sean's isolation initially characterizes him, but it is his growing assertiveness that reveals his true character and propels forward both the plot and Puck and Sean's relationship. The story is really made by the artful simplicity yet deep passion for the sea, the horses, the land and family.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

We so far have met her roommates: Beverly, Pearl and Dina who each have their own personality. Nurse Marshall is intense, where Nurse Gunderson is kind. The last book in the Maze Runner trilogy, presenting an equally exciting and action packed conclusion. Making their way in the real world (Denver to be exact) is proving just as difficult as their WICKED trials, as Thomas and his friends learn just how badly the Flare is spreading. Let me just say, I was nearly crying at some of the events that took place.  Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

The last part of a really great fantasy trilogy showcasing witches, vampires, magic, love, science and history, this book further emotionally develops its characters. Still full of new love in this third book, it provides exciting closure to a monumental and complex trilogy that I just couldn't put down. Some parts were a little heavy for me, but the writing was just as magnificent as in the first novel. A note, it does contain mature content. The first book is: The Discovery of Witches.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

There are some interesting mind games in this volume as those who know Mizuki's secret handle interacting with others who also know and each have their own interest in her. The pictures help portray how the characters interact with each other so it doesn't rely on dialogue. The topic of the volume was modelling, so there were some really neat pictures in this one.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

This is an amusing manga featuring rich teenagers experiencing the thrills of common life. In this volume, Kyoya experiences a commoner'a shopping expo with Haruhi and Haruhi begins to understand a bit more about the enigmatic shadow leader of the host club. Initially repulsed by his strategic materialism, she comes to realization that perhaps Kyoya isn't as cold-hearted as he seems. Kyoya finds her deduction interesting. The rest of the host club experience fun commoner activities like visiting the pet store and watching a play.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

Nakatsu struggles to deal with pressures from a tyrannical interim-headmaster to confess to cheating when he hadn't. Similar complaints of harsh mistreatment reach all 3 R.A.s' ears and they and the students struggle to deal with it. It provides an excellent example of how diplomacy and responsibility can solve problems just as easily, easier in fact, as fighting. Also it touches upon the interesting concept of freedom and how one has the freedom to carry out one's responsibilities, "self-sufficient freedom", but not the freedom for reckless indulgence, "self-destructive freedom". Especially now with issues over privacy invasions, social media and gun laws, freedom is an important topic.
This volume also highlights Sano's concern for Mizuki and his strongly developing feelings for his roommate. The volume wraps up with a photo shoot that suggests the photographer may have figured out Mizuki's secret. It easily balances the seriousness and silly exuberance which often frequent the lives of teenagers.   Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

Julia assesses Mizuki's friends before she returns to America and Sano and Mizuki both think about what will happen if the other discovers Mizuki's secret. They both are apprehensive about their future friendship, but the tension and indecision isn't so stalled that their relationship doesn't progress. The book is paced well between the development of their relationship and the events that take place outside of it. The intriguing teaser of Sano's brother, Shin, leaves the reader wondering how the antagonizing situation will resolve and Mizuki's role in its resolution. But of course even as Shin runs away, a new problem arises that promises wonderful artwork and more delving into the past of Dr. Umeda- a modeling job!  Click here to see if this book is available from the library!

I wanted to start this book because the movie coming out in September has a favorite actor of mine in it, Dylan O'Brien, and I'm so glad I read it! The book's main character Thomas is thrown into a strange place called the Glade, only inhabited by teenage boys, with no memories of who he was before. Outside the walls of the Glade lays a maze, with horrific creatures called Grievers. Working with his new friends, Thomas needs to find a way to help them all escape.  Click here to see if this book is available from the library!
