|Help Detect Invasive HWA on Hemlocks & Spotted Lanternfly w/Smartphone App|
Event Type: Computer Classes|
Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Time: 12:00 PM
HWA (hemlock wooly adelgid) is a tiny insect pest that has been killing hemlock trees; the pest has been found in Saratoga county. The New York Natural Heritage Program’s Invasive Species Database Program (nyimapinvasives.org), together with partners at the Hemlock Initiative (https://blogs.cornell.edu/nyshemlockinitiative/ ) and the Capital Mohawk PRISM (http://www.capitalmohawkprism.org/ ) is leading an effort by volunteer citizen scientists to identify infected hemlock trees as early as possible.
This class also introduces the spotted lanternfly (SLF), an insect that threatens valuable forest and agricultural plants like oaks, grapes, and apples. SLF is causing significant damage in Pennsylvania and is probably moving to New York. Egg masses can survive overwinter and can travel on vehicles, wood, and so forth, long distances. Hatching occurs in May. Early detection can be crucial to controlling its spread to New York.
Register to get trained in detecting both HWA and the spotted lanternfly, and in using the iMapInvasives Mobile app to record your observations in New York’s invasive species database.
