 A lifelong Lomontville resident, award-winning poet Matthew J. (Matt) Spireng often writes about people and places close to home. His reading on Oct. 23 will feature a fresh look at people, places and creatures area residents may find familiar. Spireng is the author of eight poetry books, including three full-length books, the most recent of which, Good Work, won the 2019 Sinclair Poetry Prize and was published in 2020 by Evening Street Press in Sacramento, CA. His book What Focus Is was published in 2011 by WordTech Communications. His book Out of Body won the 2004 Bluestem Poetry Award and was published in 2006 by Bluestem Press at Emporia State University in Kansas. His published chapbooks are: Clear Cut; Young Farmer; Encounters; Inspiration Point, winner of the 2000 Bright Hill Press Poetry Chapbook Competition; and Just This. Since 1990, more than 1,300 of his poems have appeared in publications across the United States in such places as North American Review, Tar River Poetry, Rattle, Louisiana Literature, Southern Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner and Poet Lore. He is an 11-time Pushcart Prize nominee, has won several national contests for individual poems, and been recognized in many others. For 14 months, from March 2020, Spireng posted a poem a day on his Facebook page and on the local Nextdoor page to entertain people during the height of the pandemic. His website is
